Five Sacred Days of Durga Puja

Three calendars, kept apart

Each day is shown in three separate systems. They measure time differently and are never mixed.

Gregorian dateThe ordinary calendar used around the world, e.g. 17 October 2026.
Bengali calendarThe solar Bangabda calendar of Bengal: months follow the sun, e.g. 30 Ashwin 1433.
Hindu TithiThe lunar day of the Hindu almanac, e.g. Shukla Paksha Saptami. It is a tithi, not a separate 'Hindi calendar'.

The lunar month is Ashwin (Shukla Paksha) while the Bengali solar month has already turned to Kartik; the exact tithi timings depend on the panjika followed.

Five Days, One Journey

Durga Puja is more than five dates on a calendar. It is a journey—from invitation to arrival, from celebration to farewell.

It begins in the quiet of Mahalaya, when the Goddess is called. On Shashthi she is welcomed; on Saptami the nine plants of Nabapatrika are bathed and brought in, and nature itself enters the worship. Ashtami gathers everyone in flowers and prayer, Navami carries the festival toward its fullness, and on Dashami the farewell comes, softened by sindoor, embraces and blessings.

Each date on this calendar is only a doorway. Behind it are the drums, the smell of incense, the aunts folding the offerings, the children waiting for the procession. The dates tell you when; the days themselves tell you why.
